Buddy Lessons

When faced with a new challenge or concept, students need space to think before they can be expected to put it all together. On the one hand, students know that mistakes are okay, yet they can also be fearful of making mistakes. To prepare for upcoming challenges, students are prepped in advance during their buddy time. Games in buddy lessons help concepts stick better because students are engaged, and approaching a concept from a different angle. All of the activities are geared towards the musical goal of students being able to make exciting sounds at the piano.

Lesson Options

Beginning students can start buddy lessons if a match is available, or with private lessons only. Buddies are matched by age.

Buddy Lessons

‘Buddy lesson’ means that a student has a 25 or 30-min private lesson followed by 20 or 30 min of overlapping or “buddy” time with a peer. Buddy lessons provide a fun and motivating environment where buddies benefit from each other’s learning process. Activities include ear training, rhythm & chord skills, ensemble work, technique work with backing tracks, music literacy games, improvisation, and more. Students learn thoroughly through this balance of focusing on pieces during their private lesson time, and musicianship and creative skills during buddy time.

Private Lessons

30-min private lessons are the entry point for many students, and are appropriate for the first two years of study. During this time we focus on developing a solid technical foundation, and work on an average of 2 pieces per week. Once students graduate to more challenging material, they usually feel the limitations of the 30-min lesson structure. It’s recommended that students switch to 45 or 60-min buddy lessons when a buddy match becomes available.

Duo Ensemble Program

The student chamber music program is a benefit of studio membership.

Students in grades 4-12 are eligible once they’ve met prerequisites in sight-playing skills. Participation is subject to the cooperating teacher having a student match of similar age and level available. Students benefit from developing listening skills, musical sensitivity, and making musician friends. There are no additional fees required to participate.

Performance Opportunities

Students perform in an annual spring recital at a special venue. Students participating in the ensemble program will have an additional opportunity to perform at their partner’s recital. More opportunities are available for highly motivated students who love to perform.

Location

Lessons are held at the teacher’s home studio, located near the Town Center in Acton, MA.

Online Lessons

Online lessons are taught occasionally during cases of mild illness or inclement weather. We use engaging educational materials and games that are specifically designed for online lessons. The online lesson experience has been upgraded to be able to show close-up overhead views of the piano so that students can follow along easily.
